BTVS Episode 1x12 "Prophecy Girl" Review
Rating: 10/10
I don't think anyone had any doubt that this episode would be a 10 for me. I had really high expectations for this episode and it completely delivered. This was a huge step up in the emotional stakes, and SMG's acting was incredible. I mentioned that I think I knew before watching that Buffy dies and gets revived at some point. Guys, I really thought that happened at like the end of the show. I did not expect that to be at the end of season 1 at all, so I was actually shocked when I found out the prophecy, and the whole episode I was lowkey expecting it to be thwarted somehow. I cried twice in this episode. I first started tearing up during the (obvious) scene where Buffy finds out she's going to die, but the trigger that made the tears actually start flowing down my face was when she said "I don't wanna die." The whole reaction to the prophecy just felt so real and raw, I think it was so perfectly written. Her wanting to just give up and try to escape felt so realistic. It also made me realise how weird it must feel to know if you die your role will just be replaced by someone else. Her asking Giles if he will train the next Slayer... just kill me. The scene with her mom was also so sad, with her mom trying so hard to relate to her and understand her, but she has no idea what Buffy's actually going through. Buffy saying, "And you had your whole life ahead of you," was INSANE, like that is a crazy line. The scene with Willow discovering the dead students was insane, because this show has had so many gruesome deaths already but it somehow managed to make this seem tonally so much much serious. Then you see Willow explaining it to Buffy, and you can really feel the difference in how it affected her. She asks Buffy "What are we going to do?" and Buffy replies, "What we have to." I feel like you can see the moment right there when Buffy realises she's going to have to fight him.I cried a second time when she started arguing with Giles and said, "That isn't how it goes." The quiet acceptance of her death just got me. I realise now that I severely overestimated the role of the Anointed, like he really just led her and that was it. I thought all those grooming/training montages were for a reason but sure. I'm confused now, will we see that kid again or has his role been completed now? Is he just a kid vampire? That being said it's actually amazing how Buffy ended up knowing exactly who he was and just willingly followed him. The prophecy being self fulfilling actually hurt my heart so bad. Like what do you mean she's only dying because she found out that she's gonna die!!! Even knowing the prophecy I still didn't fully expect her to actually get bitten like that and die. That is a crazy move to pull in your season 1 finale. Her getting "revived" by CPR is kinda funny to me because I really thought there was gonna be some supernatural shenanigans that saved her, but it just being CPR is kinda amazing. I do love a prophecy loophole. Her coming back just full of confidence because her worst fear already came true was incredible. She had to go into a fight that she knew she was going to lose, the worst feeling ever, but then she makes it out and just feels invincible. One aspect of this episode that I LOVED is how much they amped up the sheer drama. Like Buffy being in a prom dress is LITERALLY ICONIC. The theme song playing when she was walking over to face the Master. The amount of iconic sassy Buffy one liners was perfect. My only slight baby criticism of this ep is I would've liked to see her fighting the Master for a little bit longer.Characters:
- **Buffy:** MVP of the episode, MVP of the season, MVP of my heart. She may be dead but she's still pretty.
- Cordelia: I am so so happy that she came to the rescue, and I really hope she joins the main characters next season, now that she knows all about vampires. She's such an entertaining character to me, I just want to see more of her.
- Xander: It felt like this closed out the Xander/Buffy story with a clear rejection (not super thrilled by how he handled that but didn't really expect more) so I'm really hoping he's over it by next season. I am so beyond happy that Willow didn't agree to be his pity date, like I have so much respect for her standing up for herself and refusing to be his second choice. Xander did save Buffy's life though, and I do respect him going to Angel for help. We can maybe work out some sort of reduced sentence for that.
