BTVS Episode 2x01 "When She Was Bad" Review

Rating: 8/10

I didn't realise the title was so literal. This was a difficult episode to watch in parts, cause it was so hard to see Buffy making such destructive choices. I think it was well done though, and I give it points for not brushing over how much trauma she's been through. I'm really glad they gave her space to work through it. I like that we saw her parents discuss her behaviour, it did make me feel bad for all three of them cause that is a sucky situation for both her and her parents. Buffy's nightmare of Giles attacking her just made me sad. The actual plot with the resurrecting the Master was okay. Interesting that the Anointed is still around. I liked that the "closest" was mistranslated and meant actually physically close, I think translation errors are always fun. To me, it's a little crazy that they just buried him though, like why wouldn't they cremate him to be safe? Maybe they thought there was no risk but they went to all the effort of burying him in the graveyard and I don't really get why. At least destroying his bones gave Buffy a cathartic moment though. Made me chuckle how embarrassingly easy it was for her to kill the last vampire after he made such a big deal of turning her face into powder, or whatever. I loved the ending with Willow and Xander just moving on from it, no apology needed. Like maybe it would've been nice to see her apologise but I think they already knew she wasn't her usual self and even though she made a big mistake she clearly regretted it, and they didn't punish her any longer cause my girl has been through ENOUGH. It was a really sweet ending, I appreciate their friendship.Characters:

- **Xander**: The first half of this episode I wanted to die whenever I saw Xander onscreen. But then in the second half I gained a lot of respect for him. A) for admitting that Buffy was acting out of character and not dying on the hill that she actually liked him, B) immediately defending Willow after Buffy snapped at her, and C) for the scene where Buffy finds him in the library. That scene was so tense and him saying, "If you hurt Willow I'll kill you" kinda gagged me a bit. Might have been my favourite scene of the episode, just because seeing Xander get mad at Buffy was so unexpected but so well executed. So I suppose Xander can have the MVP this episode... I'm just glad that whenever it comes down to it Xander does prioritise his childhood friend over his crush. I may hate the idea of them as a couple, but I do think Xander and Willow have some really sweet friendship moments, and have that kind of comfortability with each other that you only get from knowing someone so long. I'm genuinely confused though if the show is trying to go down the relationship route for them or not, like I just can't tell.

- Buffy: I was obviously not happy with how she acted for most of the ep, but I do think it was really realistic. The scene where she was dancing with Xander went on for way too long and was difficult to watch, especially after I already had to suffer through a Xander/Willow almost kiss. Bad Buffy scares me a lot though, like the scene where she was literally torturing information out of that vampire was insane, and just shows how dangerous she can be. Is the reason she pushed Angel away so much purely because he's a vampire, and just reminds her too much of all that?

- Cordelia: I appreciate her trying to talk to Buffy so much, like she is really not as shallow as she appears to be, she's actually pretty perceptive.Out of context notes:

"OWAH WHY ARE U LOOKING AT EACH OTHER LIKE THAT PLEASE STOP. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" "willow u just gave me the ick" "this scene is going on for fucking ever" "'i hate that girl' help why he look like a kid steve jobs"
