BTVS Episode 2x11 "Ted" Review
Rating: 7/10
This episode took me in such an unexpected direction, like I thought I knew where it was going but I really didn't. It was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. At first I was like maybe he's just a red herring villain because evil stepdad seems too obvious. Then he very quickly just became super weird towards Buffy, by instantly trying to parent her and then threatening to slap her. I couldn't really tell where it was going to go from there, but then the episode took such a crazy turn when Buffy "killed" him, that genuinely caught me so off guard. That section of the episode where Buffy genuinely thought she had killed an real person was so dark, and honestly I think I'm a little disappointed that it turned out he was a "monster" after all, because that was the most thought-provoking part of the episode to me. I feel like it raised a really interesting problem where Buffy has more strength than the average person and is so used to dealing with monsters that it would be easy for her to accidentally kill a human. But then all that tension kinda just vanished because she didn't actually kill him and he just happened to be a murder robot, which just felt a little bit too convenient. I do get they were setting up the robot stuff since the start, and I probably should've picked up on it, but I was just distracted by how creepy he was to her that I kinda thought he was just a regular creepy man. All in all, I'm conflicted with how I feel about this episode because the middle section was a good way to twist up a MOTW but it just ended a little too neatly. I also didn't find the robot aspect to be that interesting, especially with Xander just dropping the backstory exposition at the end. I think it's one of those episodes that's probably very different on a rewatch.Characters:
- **Giles**: MVP because him ripping out an arrow from his back and stabbing a vampire with it was badass. I'm happy that him and Jenny are back together too.
- JOYCE: I KNOW HER NAME NOW!!! I lowkey didn't realise until I started writing this review that I finally found out Buffy's mom's name, so now I'm thinking they might've said it way earlier and I didn't notice? Anyway, she pissed me off this episode because if your child says your boyfriend threatened to slap her BELIEVE HER!!! Also why are you letting him parent your teenager when they just met???
- Xander/Cordelia: 😊
Out of context notes:
"'i feel like killing myself' HELP?" "'daddys here' ??????"
