BTVS Episode 2x14 "Innocence" Review

Rating 10/10

This episode genuinely might be my favourite episode of the show so far, I don't even know how to put into words the emotions I'm feeling right now. Even though the emotions were mostly negative, to me that's just the mark of a great show and strong writing, to be able to invoke that kind of response. The main plot point of this episode was Angel losing his soul. I genuinely never expected that, and I didn't even realise that was possible, so when he killed that random lady at the start I thought it was just some temporary possession-like thing. I genuinely felt so much tension and anxiety the whole time, especially when he walked up to Xander and Willow, because there's something so scary to me about someone they trust so much being evil and them not realising. Then when I found out the reason he turned evil I actually wanted to throw up. The concept that if a vampire feels true happiness their soul disappears, what sick person thought of that?? Finding that out literally blew my mind like that is just insanely messed up, they are literally just forced to suffer and be tormented forever and not even ALLOWED to repent for their past actions or be redeemed cause they'll become evil again, like it really just hammers it in that getting your soul back is a curse and not a good thing. And the worst part about it all was that his moment of happiness was because he had sex with Buffy. I didn't talk about Angel and Buffy having sex last review because I couldn't tell where it was going and I was lowkey really nervous for how they were gonna handle it. I never expected the situation to actually become that fucked up, like it genuinely makes me sick how that led to him losing his soul and made Buffy feel like it was her fault. And if that wasn't enough the way he spoke to Buffy all episode was so painful, especially before she realised what was going on. Like teenage girls are already made to feel enough shame and guilt surrounding sex and this just multiplied that by a million and it was awful. I just felt so so sad for her. However, I absolutely loved Giles and Buffy's conversation at the end, with him telling Buffy that it wasn't her fault and that he is never gonna make her feel guilty. That really healed me after the stress of the rest of the episode, and she really needed to hear that from him. He is probably the person she looks up to and respects the most, so I love that he told her that he respects her in return. I'm also glad Buffy got to kick Angel in the balls. That was equally healing. I liked the interactions between Spike, Drusilla and Angel, like they did really feel like old friends, but again I'm so confused about Drusilla just being chill with him, like wasn't she literally torturing him 4 episodes ago? But in this ep she was just laughing about how he was gonna hurt Buffy like he hurt her? Like okay, I guess... Them as a trio highkey scares me though. They also did answer my questions about the soul/curse thing a little bit though, which I was pleased about although the actual answers were less pleasing. (Of course the curse is old magic that has been lost, like it couldn't just be easy.) I'm also glad Jenny didn't really betray them cause I was getting nervous about that. RIP her uncle though. Then there was also the stuff with Willow and Xander. The way Xander and Cordelia treat each other is starting to make me a little sad, like it's played for laughs a lot but there are so many moments where I just feel bad for Xander (which is crazy in itself). I didn't really expect Willow to actually be so upset when she found out, cause she's always been pretty nonchalant whenever Xander's shown interest in other girls, but when she said "You would rather be with someone you hate than be with me," my mouth literally dropped open. I just didn't expect that at all and it's really sad cause I don't think Xander's done anything wrong (for once) but I also get from Willow's perspective it's like he will be with ANYONE except for her. I love Willow but I do think she overreacted a little bit? On the other hand though, I loved the scene with her and Oz so much, it was so sweet to me that he refused to kiss her until she actually wanted to kiss him and not out of jealousy. Xander came in clutch this episode, him retaining soldier info is actually really useful so I hope its not just a one time thing, but I fear it might be. The Judge saying "What's that do?" right before getting blasted into smithereens was hilarious. I expected The Judge to do way more but then I feel like the actual villain of this episode was Angel which I didn't see coming at all. In the last 10 minutes I kept waiting for someone to come up with something to save him but then I reached the end and he was still evil... That just makes me so nervous for the upcoming episodes, but like I'm sure he must get his soul back but how??? And when???

Out of context notes: "i forgot to say drusilla looks so cunty these eps" "me when i get period cramps" "''walking, well, rolling' okay angel u got a giggle from me" "spike angel and drusilla are giving toxic poly throuple rn"
