BTVS Episode 2x16 "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" Review
Rating 7/10
Controversial episode for me, and I might change the rating, but it was extremely entertaining all the way through. I immediately recognised Amy from Witch and I really like that she made a reappearance. In recent episodes I've been feeling tired of Xander/Cordelia because I felt like they were more fun before they were together and were just starting to get a little toxic and boring, but this episode completely changed that for me. Xander was actually sweet when he was giving the present to Cordelia and I actually felt so bad for him when she broke up with him. The real lesson of this show is never feel sorry for Xander, I guess. Cordelia secretly wearing the necklace was insane, like that was such a good moment. Then we have the big moment of this episode being Xander casting a love spell on her... I genuinely despise this concept so much and I was so anxious about it but I'm glad at least it was more of a 'I wanna break her heart for revenge' motivation and not 'I want her to love me so I can take advantage and be with her' motivation. Doesn't make it much better though. At first, I thought that the spell didn't work because she was already in love with him and I thought that was going to be a super cute concept but I guess I was wrong... I'm not even going to bring up certain scenes in this because it's actually upsetting. I get that it's supposed to be uncomfortable but unfortunately that doesn't make it any more tolerable for me. Anyway, Xander blocking the library door and then it being pulled open from the other side was one of the most hilarious moments in the show. Then it happened again in the basement with him nailing the boards and the door opening. Genuine comedy. One thing I will say is I get the Buffy Willow parts, but did we really have to bring Jenny and Buffy's mom into it... That felt unnecessarily uncomfortable. However, Angel randomly showing up and then Drusilla protecting Xander was amazing. It's weird because if you told me there's an episode where Xander casts a love spell on Cordelia then I would be like omg ew I hate them as a couple, but by the end of this episode I actually just really like them... I do think Cordelia should've been way more pissed but whatever. Actually, everyone should've been more pissed. The most healing part of this episode was Giles getting angry at Xander. Honestly, Xander's storylines with Willow and Buffy are my least favourite part of this show, and I was hoping that with Oz it would be over now. I just don't want to see any even slightly romantic scenes between him and them so I think that also pulls the rating down for me.
Characters:
- **Giles:** If Giles was in Obsession it would've had a happy ending I think.
- Xander: I've never felt as conflicted about a character as I do Xander. Sometimes I genuinely hate him and sometimes I feel bad for him. I think the frustrating part is that he is presented as a "good guy" character, so a lot of his behaviour isn't taken seriously by the show itself. The whole love spell situation is genuinely a fucked up thing to do and I feel like he got off so lightly, like at the very least we could've got an apology to Cordelia, Buffy and Willow. Like all that, and not even a single "sorry" came out of his mouth. I really don't want to dislike him but he makes it so difficult.
Out of context notes: "why they giving toxic throuple" "that was actually cute from xander rip, i fucking hate you xander" "OMG SHE WAS WERAING IT" "ok whole cast getting involved"
