BTVS Episode 1x06 "The Pack" Review
Rating 4/10
Maybe I'm being too harsh with my rating but honestly this episode had no redeeming moments for me. To get the obvious out of the way, That Scene made me so uncomfortable. I obviously know that it's written like that on purpose but I think the reason it rubs me the wrong way so much is because of how Xander has been written. His crush on Buffy seems like its supposed to come across as harmless and funny, or like I'm supposed to feel sorry for him, and I know he was obviously possessed and those weren't actually his actions, but it really just feels like a parallel to entitled 'Nice Guy'/incel behaviour in real life. I know it's probably unfair to Xander but I'm already trying not to dislike him and then the show throws a scene like that in my face. It doesn't help that the real Xander has an established pattern of creepy/borderline predatory behaviour already (like spying on Buffy changing in literally the previous episode.) The ending also really disappointed me. I was slightly moved by Xander saving Willow immediately, but any goodwill I felt for him vanished when it was revealed that he actually does remember everything. It just feels like they're brushing it under the rug by having everyone pretend it didn't happen, when in actuality that would surely be so traumatic for Buffy. It just gives me zero hope that they'll ever readdress this, or Xander's crush.Even aside from all that though, I just really didn't care for the plot of this episode. I definitely prefer more magical, humanistic villains like witches or vampires to the animal-based ones. There was way too many long boring shots of Xander and his hyena friends just walking around broodily or laughing at people. The other hyenas were essentially NPCs, and it also feels a little ridiculous that a pretty, stylish, blonde girl like Buffy would get made fun of, but I guess I'll have to suspend my disbelief with that since they've been establishing that Buffy isn't popular. I will say this episode was good at creating tension, and it was pretty crazy that the show had the guts to kill off the principal like that. The scene with the mother and the baby also made me so anxious.
I have no MVP for this episode, and the only out of context note left is that I'm pretty sure the main bully was in OUAT so that was a surprise.
