BTVS Episode 1x07 "Angel" Review
Rating 10/10
I did not expect this episode to be my first 10... but here we are. I just really enjoyed the vampire lore drops, the tension, the misunderstanding, the dialogue, like I was so intrigued start to finish. I realised a few eps ago that I'm not supposed to know Angel is a vampire, but I do think I would at least be suspicious even I didn't already know that, like it's pretty obvious even before this episode (cause how else would he know about everything going on). As soon as he said vampires killed his family I wrote "did Angel kill his family?"...so called that. The way it was revealed seconds after they kissed for the first time was kind of insane, like the worst possible time for Buffy, I really felt sorry for her in that moment, and I don't blame her at all for being conflicted because up until then he hadn't done anything wrong to her. The whole setup with Darla basically framing Angel for attacking Buffy's mom was so well done, and I absolutely loved that. Buffy saying, "I've killed a lot of vampires. I've never hated one before," was such a good line that I had to write it down because killing vampires has never been personal to her and she's also never really had to worry about it like morally or emotionally because vampires have never been anything more than just monsters until now, but killing someone who she has seen as more "human" is completely different. She also hasn't experienced (at least in the show) someone she actually cares about dying or being seriously injured yet. I wonder if Buffy will be put in another situation where she has to fight and possibly kill someone who is actually human and if she'll be able to do that.I have been waiting so long to find out why Angel is "good" like I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the reveal and it did not disappoint. I knew there was something about him having a soul but I didn't know how that happened. What stands out to me is that giving someone their soul back seems like it would be a positive/healing thing in another circumstance but the way its framed here as being a curse/punishment makes so much sense. The idea of having killed so many people including your family, and then suddenly regaining your empathy and all that guilt just crashing down, like I don't even know how to put into words what an insane concept that is. I'm really not sure how to feel about Buffy and Angel's relationship right now, cause I do think they have a lot of chemistry, and them at the end being in a place where they know they both have feelings for each other but aren't in a position to act on it, I do find that kind of romantic, but honestly that's more interesting to me than if they were actually a couple. I'm a little conflicted by the age gap, not just because of the vampire thing but because Buffy is 16 but I have no idea yet how old Angel is supposed to be mentally so I'm just gonna ignore it for now I guess? I did love the ending scene though, where after they kissed they said it's painful, and then it reveals Buffy's cross left a burn on Angel. Like maybe an obvious metaphor but I loved that visual. I also loved getting to see the anointed one more, I find it incredibly creepy to see such evil lines coming out of a child's mouth. I'm both terrified and excited to see how they handle that because if Buffy has to kill what looks like a child that's gonna be so dark.Characters:
- **Angel:** MVP. Well, the episode is named after him. He saved Buffy twice this episode, and killed Darla so points for that. He obviously is full of self hatred and I find it so interesting that he didn't even try to defend himself from Buffy, cause he thought he deserved her anger even though he didn't even bite her mom, but just because he had the desire to. Felt like he was a little passively suicidal with the way he was goading Buffy into killing him. He clearly doesn't view himself as human but I wonder is there really much difference between a human and a vampire with a soul other than the obvious immortality and weaknesses? Seems like just a superpowered human. Curious to see if he tries to seek redemption cause right now it seems like he doesn't even think he's worthy of that.
- Darla: I'm actually a little disappointed she died this episode because I was finally starting to find her interesting, mostly because I thought her setting up Angel was unexpectedly smart. I'm a bit confused by how she was talking about being in love with Angel, cause I'd assume vampires can't really feel love like that without a soul, but it is interesting how she said she made him. I wonder if that means vampires get a certain type of attachment to the one who created them. Her having guns caught me so off guard and looked a bit silly if I'm honest, but I like that it made her more of a threat at least.
- Giles: Can we just appreciate that he constantly offers himself up as a punching bag for Buffy's training? Poor guy...
Out of context notes:
"willow just said xander gave her the ick" "HOW MUCH OLDER???" "carlisle cullen theres someone i need you to meet"
