BTVS Episode 1x09 "The Puppet Show" Review

Rating 9 -> 8/10

I thought I had this at a solid 7/8 but that plot twist was so good that it really bumped it up for me. I absolutely love the idea of someone seeing Buffy and thinking that she's a demon, it makes so much sense and the reveal was so good with both Buffy and the puppet being like, wait what? I think puppets being possessed and creepy is also a really overdone trope which is why I was leaning towards a 7, but having the puppet actually be a demon hunter is a really good way to flip that. It is a little annoying to me when the characters are initially dismissive whenever Buffy has a theory about something, cause how are you in a world where you had an evil praying mantis teacher and you're questioning if a puppet is evil? It did make me think though that it would be so cool if there was a murder mystery type episode where there was actually nothing supernatural going on (though it'd probably have to be set much later to make it more of a surprise). It also annoyed me that Buffy smashed that locker like that because how was she planning to explain that later... This episode really had me questioning what the general public and students think of all the stuff that's happened because the amount of dead students at this school is insane, and everyone seems to just move on like it's a normal occurrence now. Like realistically wouldn't they cancel the talent show if there was a murder? But I guess maybe this town is used to that stuff, especially since before Buffy came the monsters were just running rampant. Also questioning how the school allows one of the students to have a sharp head-chopping blade in their act. That has to be a health and safety violation. I'm so happy I got to see the talent show act at the end. Avant-garde.It also brought up a question to me about the Slayer. I know the intro says there's one a generation, does that mean only one Slayer exists at once, or is one born like every couple decades? Is there only one in the whole world, or are they scattered around? Is the US the only place that needs a Slayer or is everywhere else just fucked? Is it just Sunnydale that needs a Slayer because its the Hellmouth? Should Slayer even be capitalised? I'm sure these questions will be answered eventually.

Characters:

- **Morgan:** I contemplated making Sid the puppet the MVP but he was a little too creepy (in a pervert way, not a possessed doll way). So I guess Morgan is the next best thing. I'm really sorry you have brain cancer and also that you died. Thanks for trying to find the demon though.

- Principal Snyder: This character is so incredibly creepy and suspicious that I genuinely cannot tell if they were just making him a red herring or if there's actually something going on with him. I really thought he was about to attack Buffy in one scene and I actually wrote down "predicting that the demon is the principal, oop there it is" because of the sinister ass shot of him walking past Giles right before the brain dropped. Okay, he's probably just a red herring but like I do not trust that guy at all.

Out of context notes:

Genuinely the only thing I have left that I didn't already mention is "evil pinocchio"... At least you know I'm not making these notes up at the end now.
